Pomodoro Technique - How to Increase Focus and Improve Memory Retention
Are you trying to be more productive and are looking for methods to get more stuff done? We will explain how you can use the Pomodoro technique to accomplish more in a single day.
Being productive in this modern day and age is one of the toughest things to do. With a world filled with sources of enjoyment, it is less likely that you will choose working over those few extra hours of sleep.
But there are many people who are using their time wisely and getting more work done in a quite lesser amount of time. What is the source of such productivity?
Everyone in this world has the same 24 hours in a day. How you make use of those 24 hours is up to you. While it’s physically impossible to work for all 24 hours, you should work sincerely for at least your allotted time.
You may sit to work and stay on your desk for 18 hours a day, but if you keep getting distracted, you would just be wasting time there. This is why it’s so important to work more effectively.
And the Pomodoro technique is the best way to do so!
Many of you might have heard of this famous productivity technique called the Pomodoro technique. It is a time management method in which you divide your work, break, and relax time proportionately.
This technique was invented by an Italian guy named Francesco Cirillo. You must be thinking about what he might have been thinking when he made such a technique. He just wanted to organize his tasks in his daily routine and get through his day to day struggles without missing anything in his schedule.
He used a kitchen timer in the shape of a tomato to let timers for every task he did. Every once in a while, the timer would go off, and he’d have to be done with the task at hand to take a short break, to move on to his next task.
This technique is not only for going by your day but also can be used to organize much larger scale works. This technique of productivity can be implemented in both your personal life and for large companies and businesses to outgrow your competition.
Let’s look at some scenarios in which you would use this technique to get more work done in a rather short time.
We are all in a pandemic and are mostly stuck at home. As we are all still pretty much in quarantine, our lives are more home-oriented. Feeling sluggish and lazy is not anything out of the ordinary. But does that stop us from working and grinding our way to make money?
This is why the Pomodoro technique is so effective, especially for those of you who are working from home. You have many tasks for a day, and finishing everything before the deadlines can be pretty daunting at times.
If you don’t manage your time more effectively, you will be stuck doing one task for hours. Here’s where this technique comes into play.
Whether you work for a company, organization, or pretty much anywhere, or even if you are a freelancer, this technique is great for you. Moreover, the Pomodoro technique is absolutely brilliant for students even. As a student using this technique, you can cover more chapters much faster and efficiently if you study implementing this technique.
While it is an incredibly useful method of being productive at home, it can be used in offices and workplaces as well. You will need to do time management while working regardless of where you are working. Getting work done has nothing to do with working from home or working in an office.
When you divide your tasks proportionately and do them accordingly, you get more work done. That’s pretty obvious. But how this benefits you is that, now that you are working more efficiently, your boss will probably notice this and either give you a raise or even a promotion.
But let’s say you don’t work for someone, but rather have your own business that you run. Can this technique help you achieve more? Definitely! As a matter of fact, usage of this technique can help you outgrow your competitor’s business, as you will probably be getting way more work done than them.
Time management is key to growing a business and making it reach higher levels of success. This is why the Pomodoro technique is so useful in a workplace setting. Using this technique can make you go places!
We have talked about how this technique can benefit you and help you organize your tasks better. Now let’s look at the method itself. How are you exactly going to be implementing this method into your life? What are the rules? How to best manage time using the Pomodoro technique? We will be answering all your questions.
What you will be doing is divide your work into a few parts and get done with one portion at first. No breaks, and not slacking off. After that, take a break and start again. Let’s have a look at how exactly you will divide your work and time!
Step 1: Create a standard to-do list of all the things you need to accomplish for the day. This list should be divided into twice as many hours that you will work. This means, if you work for 4 hours, there should be a list of 8 tasks. We will explain why in a bit.
Step 2: Each of your working sessions will last exactly 25 minutes. So you have to try your best to complete your task and reach your goal within those 25 minutes.
Step 3: Work efficiently for 25 minutes without slacking off one bit. Put your entire focus on the task at hand, and do it sincerely.
Step 4: Whether you are finished with your task or not, stop exactly when 25 minutes have passed. Track your activities and check off the first task if you were able to complete it.
Step 5: Take a break for exactly 5 minutes. For these 5 minutes, do not do anything that will harm your focus. This means no using your phone to browse social media and no watching TV or videos on your devices either. You can walk around, stretch, take a power nap, and even take a shower if necessary. But you have to do that within 5 minutes.
Step 6: Back to work. Work for 25 minutes straight, and then repeat what you just did. Repeat this method a total of 4 times and then stop. After you are done with 4 Pomodoro, take a longer break this time. This break should last anything between 20-30 minutes, and not more than that.
Step 7: Go back to work and repeat for as many Pomodoro you need.
You can use this technique to finish your tasks faster while focusing completely when doing so. This results in faster completion of tasks and also better quality of your work as you are 100% focused on working.
So by using this technique in this way, you can be more productive.
Technology is advancing so fast that we can’t even see how far we have come. While Cirillo used a tomato clock, you as a person living in 2020 won’t have to buy a silly kitchen timer to organize your work.

The Pomodoro technique is a very spontaneous method of being productive, but it does allow you to take breaks. A lot of people ask us what to do during breaks while trying to be productive using Pomodoro. There are actually a number of things that you can do during the breaks that will actually let you work for much longer and more efficiently.
- During the 5 minute breaks that you will get between each Pomodoro session, we advise you not to do anything that is distracting, as we mentioned earlier. When you browse social media or watch a show or video during your breaks, your attention is diverted. Your focus shifts, and you subconsciously keep thinking about the stuff you saw on Instagram or that funny video you watched on YouTube.
- And when your focus gets shifted, you start slacking off and not being as productive as you should be.
- Another thing that happens when people do distracting things during breaks is that they lose track of time and end up wasting a lot of it. Let’s face it, when you are distracted, you barely ever check the time and go back to work in time. Even if you think to yourself that you’ll only scroll through Facebook for just 5 minutes, those 5 minutes turn into hours sometimes.
- This is why we advise everyone to not engage in such activities during such short breaks.
- What you should be doing, however, is activities that are sure to re-energize you. Sitting on a desk for a few hours can be very stressful and can cause back pain. So we suggest you do some stretching during the breaks and walk around a little. This mild physical activity will make you feel more awake and also give you more energy to work again.
- You could also drink some coffee or tea during breaks, or at least make some and bring them to your desk so you can have them while working.
- Furthermore, you could take a short nap for 5 minutes. We know it isn’t possible to get proper rest in a 5-minute nap, but it can at least make you a little less tired. You don’t even have to fall asleep. Just sit there, or possibly lie down and close your eyes for 5 minutes. That little rest will go a long way.
- Another thing you could do is take a shower. However, we know 5 minutes is too short for a proper shower, so try this in the longer breaks, which brings us to what to do during the long breaks.
- After 4 Pomodoro, you get to take a break for 20-30 minutes. This is enough time to grab some snacks, take a rest, take a shower, and a lot more. We highly recommend taking a cold shower during the long breaks, as this will wake you up and also make you feel fresher so that you can work for longer without feeling too tired.
- We still advise you to not engage in distracting activities until you are completely done with all your work. Use the breaks wisely, and you will see how much more work you are getting done.
You need to remember that the things that you do during your breaks will heavily impact how productively you will be able to work during each Pomodoro session. So make sure you make the most out of your breaks and use them to your benefit, so you perform better when working. The end goal is to get more work done without slacking off!
While the Pomodoro technique is highly effective and lets you be productive, it has its downsides as well. Firstly, in order to use this technique, you will need strong integrity and determination that you will be productive no matter what.
As the rules and restrictions in this technique need to be maintained by you yourself, it is quite hard for some people to remain productive consistently throughout the entire work session.
However, that is not the only factor that decides whether you can use the Pomodoro technique or not.
It is a necessity to be in a calm and peaceful environment where there will be no distractions and interruptions while you work. You are required to work constantly, being fully focused for 25 minutes straight. You can’t afford to have any interruptions, or your flow of work will be ruined. And once you lose your flow, it is really tough to get it back within a short time.
Using the washroom is also considered an interruption, so it can be quite hard to maintain a smooth workflow. If you really have to use the washroom, you have no choice but to wait till the 25 minutes end, and you get a short break.
Besides this, there are also your physical limits. The Pomodoro technique can be highly stressful as you barely get to rest between sessions. This is one of the reasons, so many people fail at maintaining a consistent workflow when trying to use this technique.
This is why a lot of people fail to consistently maintain the Pomodoro while working. However, we would say you should still try to implement this in your life, as after some time of working like this, you will get used to it and be able to adjust everything according to your schedule.
The Pomodoro technique is undoubtedly the most popular and most widely used productivity techniques in the world. Many billionaires use this technique to organize their tasks and work much harder than their company to constantly keep growing their business. And it works almost always!
